5-Minutes to write CLEAR sentences
--
Writing to me is simply thinking through my fingers — Isaac Asimov
Effective writing makes communication easy as possible. Writing might seem like a one-off process but consists of two main stages. The actual writing stage and the editing stage. Often, both are combined to save time but in doing loses brevity.
Having an editing process to follow is essential to improving your workflow.
David Perell is an online writer who runs the course — Write of Passage.
Write of Passage is for anyone who wants to….
While his course provides a detailed approach you might not have the time to invest in it right now.
There is something you can do right now to help improve your writing in less than 2 minutes. David suggests just focusing on writing CLEAR sentences.
Create a rhythm in your writing. Like a musical melody.
- Music has tons of variety which in turn hooks up on the experience of each note, each drop, each hit. In the same way by varying sentence length, you can add a rhythm to your writing.
- Short sentences → speed things up
- Long sentences → slow things down
Link your sentences
- Each sentence should have a piece that connects it from one to the next one like different coaches of a train.
Eliminate anything confusing
- The best way to do this is by reading your writing out loud. While doing this activity notice and mark places where you feel a block. These are the places to focus on.
- For paragraphs, focus on bolding the parts which cause you to stumble. Go in and edit one section at a time and soon your writing will be improved.
Add colorful details
- Details make your reader feel like the story is happening to them. Evoking the five senses with your writing is a great milestone to focus on.
Remove the unnecessary details
- The saying goes “less is more” and it’s 100% true in writing. David suggests removing words such as “very” or “extremely” and words that don’t move the argument in a direction.
There are two apps that I use the most while in the editing phase of writing.
Looking back on the CLEAR-ity
You probably feel at this point that your original draft has been ripped apart and burned. It is at this point the writing has become CLEAR. The reader should think they could write whatever you’ve written and maybe even build on your inputs.
