Forget New Year Resolution’s and Make Habit’s Instead

Starting on a good note always feels nice and gives a burst of motivation that starts the wheel 🎡

Most people are familiar with the idea of making new year’s resolutions. Interestingly, about 80% of people drop them by the second week of February.

The answer is to focus on creating identity-based habits. I wrote about what those are and the differences it has with normal habit creation in a previous post. You can check that out below:

The way to create habits might seem like something of a mystery but there is a four-step process that can be implemented for any area of life.

Each habit can be broken down into these FOUR components:

  • Cue
  • Craving
  • Response
  • Reward

Let’s see them in an example so you can apply them to your own habits.

I use this app called Elevate for brain games daily. It focuses on training maths, reading, writing, and listening skills. Initially, I wasn’t able to do it on a consistent basis and would lose track more than I would have liked to. Then I made some changes using the Cue-Craving-Response-Reward framework.

My goal was to make sure I did this every day for let’s say 6 months to see if there was any progress. I thought about it a little and decided I wanted to get it done first thing in the morning after I woke up.

My cue was a notification from my phone at the time I was going to wake up. That overtime led to a craving of getting some mental exercise done early to jumpstart my brain and get rid of the sleep fog that builds up. My response was to get on the app and do the exercises and my reward became feeling more mentally alert by doing this activity. This way to experience feeling good I documented the process and I still continue this today.

Now you’ve seen how to break down the process of habit creation with the example above and the best part is it can be applied to anything you choose it to be.

So what’s it going to be for you? I would love to hear about them.
